This topic has been discussed a few years ago, and there have been several PKs among friends. When I talked about it before, everyone agreed. With the continuous standing in line, everyone’s ideas have been very different. So, I want to discuss this topic again.
My thoughts are related to my growth process. At first, I was very addicted to technical research. At that time, I thought that doing the best technical research would bring greater self-realization value. So when I first joined Huawei, I really enjoyed sharing the sense of accomplishment of technology with different technicians. But then I found two big problems: Firstly, I am not an interesting person who can talk about technology (in this respect, I admire TK (Yu Yang) and others very much. I have the technology and can also talk about flowers. The audience finds it interesting and easy to understand); on the other hand, relying on me to write articles one by one, my influence is really limited, which means that I cannot spread some of the values I understand, and eventually Cannot form a “sustainable” business.
The best way to solve this problem is to form technology into tools. At that time, the prototype of Pangolin and JSky was formed at that time. I think instead of letting everyone learn and understand esoteric technologies one by one, why can’t users directly use the tools that can meet the conditions and have packaged these technologies? Just like a martial arts master , You need to practice basic skills and you need a good sword, a good sword can greatly improve efficiency. If our goal is to split a mountain apart, I think the power of a sword will be far more efficient than a peerless master with deep inner strength slapped with a swollen palm. So judging from this goal process, maybe my contribution to the “jianghu” will be greater and more direct. Because after all, we are not better than anyone who can make a set of martial arts more elegant and beautiful. Those who have this kind of thinking, please forgive me to say “different ways are not conspiracy.”
So at that time, I slept less than 6 hours a day, so I used technology as a tool. I am not a programming background, and the code I write is extremely influential, let alone elegant and high-performance. However, I succeeded in turning the technology into a tool that can be used directly. When an injection tool has 100,000 downloads, I know I am one step closer to my goal. At least my influence and value are a little bit bigger. In the process of starting my business later, the benefits of tool-based software exceeded my expectations.
At this time, I discovered a new problem. This tool-based software is too far from a good product. Basically, it is a completely technology-driven product. There are many people who don’t know how to use it (I have seen many people who don’t know how to start an injection with Pangolin), and many high-end users may never use it. The user’s demand for reports is far greater than the demand for a high-end function. These are the problems that I really encountered at the time, and, is it my ultimate goal to serve professional security personnel and enterprises? I thought about it for a while, and the conclusion at that time was: we need to be more basic in security De-professionalization and civilianization. Allow more Internet companies and companies to use free basic services. So it was basically this idea to do iiScan at that time. This is no longer a product for professional teams. It completely satisfies a business or product with a “sustainable development” idea. The first thing we did at that time was to remove all the technical functions of over-service. It was not that the technology could not be realized or was useless, but that users could not perceive value. This over-service could not bring value to users , but rather A great distress, users find it very complicated and too professional, and they don’t know or even dare to use it.
When I said on Weibo that “I will concentrate on technology for the first 10 years, and I will concentrate on products for the next 10 years”, many of my friends thought that I would leave the security industry or not technology. This is actually a misunderstanding. I still keep programming for a period of time every day. I go to see our product presentations and user feedback every day. I think this is an evolution. I hope to make the ultimate products to make more and more people agree that 360 has a very good soil for making products.
I have sorted out a few key understandings of the product, not necessarily all right:
1. The product is the process of solving a certain value demand of users through a method acceptable to users;
2. Value is not the part we are talking about, but the part that users perceive;
3. As professionals, we have the responsibility and obligation to guide the development of the industry, and we need to make users accept a certain function or process on the product. I very much agree with Ford’s famous saying: “If I asked customers what they wanted, they would definitely tell me:’A faster horse.'”
4. Products that do not allow users to perceive value (no matter how excellent you think) will eventually be eliminated by history, or until the next excellent product staff takes over to achieve it, and you are an out-and-out martyr.
My controversy with a few friends is that they think that products with user-perceived value are equivalent to fake value, and they believe that technology-oriented value is equal to the true value that users can perceive. The essence is whether it is user-oriented or self-oriented.
We have a very professional team, we can implement very complex functions, but it is more important for us to enable users to perceive and form awareness of the value we hope to bring. If not, we need to adjust the method to a form that users can accept and find it cool. Instead of saying: Hey, you are too noob, too unprofessional, you are not our user.
Therefore, the final measurement method is whose products can be more accepted by users in the market, who can form greater influence, and who can make the largest products to promote the development of the industry. These are not counted if you say it, and it won’t count if I say it. The user does not count it.
