A mechanical press had a new clutch installed. The old clutch was replaced with a remanufactured unit from the same supplier. After installation, the release bearing squealed. It was a high-pitched whine that started after 10 minutes of operation and got louder. The customer thought the new clutch was defective. It wasn’t. The release bearing wasn’t the problem either. The issue was the clutch air pressure.
Why the release bearing sits on the clutch
A pneumatic clutch has a release bearing that presses against the clutch fingers to disengage. When the clutch is engaged, the release bearing should be clear of the fingers. It should spin free. If the air pressure isn’t adjusted correctly, the release bearing stays partially pressed against the fingers. It spins at the same speed as the clutch but with a constant axial load. The bearing gets hot. It squeals. The squeal is the bearing running under load at high speed — a condition it wasn’t designed for.
The new clutch was installed with the same air pressure as the old one. But the new clutch had different finger geometry. The finger travel was 2 mm less. The air cylinder that pushes the release bearing was adjusted for the old finger travel. With the new clutch, the release bearing was pushed 2 mm too far. It was riding on the fingers even when the clutch was “engaged.” The bearing spun under load. It squealed.
The fix
The air cylinder stroke was adjusted. The release bearing moved back 2 mm. When the clutch was engaged, the bearing had a 0.5 mm clearance from the fingers. It spun free. The squeal stopped after 10 minutes (the bearing had to cool down). The customer checked the clearance with a feeler gauge. 0.5 mm is the spec. Less than 0.3 mm and the bearing rides on the fingers. More than 1 mm and the clutch doesn’t fully disengage.
The other issue: the release bearing itself. On a new clutch, the release bearing should be replaced. It’s a $40 part. The customer reused the old bearing because it “looked fine.” The old bearing had wear on the contact surface. Even with correct clearance, a worn bearing will squeal. The next clutch replacement included a new release bearing. The squeal didn’t come back.
The air pressure adjustment
A pneumatic clutch runs at 5-7 bar air pressure. The pressure determines how hard the clutch engages. Too low and the clutch slips. Too high and the clutch slams in — the shock loads the transmission. But the pressure also affects the release bearing. If the air cylinder that disengages the clutch is adjusted to fully retract at 6 bar, and the system runs at 7 bar, the release bearing is pushed further than designed. Set the clutch air pressure to the nameplate value (usually 5.5 bar). Don’t run it at 7 bar because “more pressure means better engagement.” The extra pressure wears the release bearing faster.
The release bearing life
A release bearing should last about 3-5 years on a properly adjusted clutch. If it’s squealing after 6 months, something is wrong with the adjustment, not the bearing. Check the clearance first. Check the air pressure. Check the finger geometry. Don’t replace the bearing until you’ve ruled out the adjustment issues. A new bearing on a mis-adjusted clutch will squeal just as fast as the old one.
The squealing release bearing on a new clutch is almost always an adjustment problem. Set 0.5 mm clearance, run the correct air pressure, and replace the bearing anyway — it’s cheap. The bearing isn’t defective; it’s being held against the fingers when it should be clear. Check the clearance before buying another bearing.
