The Linear Guide That Ran Dry
We installed a linear guide on a dispensing axis. The guide came with grease fittings. On the installation, we greased it once. Then we forgot about it. Six months later, the guide started making noise. The balls had lost lubrication. The guide’s life was compromised. The mistake: one greasing at installation isn’t enough. Why Lubrication Matters
The balls (or rollers) in a linear guide roll between the rail and the carriage. Without lubrication, the metal-on-metal contact wears. The guide gets noisy, loses precision, and fails prematurely. Proper lubrication extends the life by 10–50×.

- Grease: A semi-solid lubricant. Stays in place (doesn’t drip). Standard for most guides. Relubricate every 3–6 months.

Step 1: Grease at Installation
New linear guides come with a light preservative oil (not lubrication). At installation, purge the preservative and fill with the correct grease. The guide manufacturer specifies the grease (typically an ISO VG 68–100 lithium grease).
Use a grease gun on the fitting (zerk) on the carriage. Pump grease until it squeezes out the ends (indicates the carriage is full). Wipe off the excess.
Step 2: Relubrication Schedule
After the initial greasing, the guide needs periodic relubrication. The interval depends on the speed and duty cycle.

For a dispensing axis (moderate speed, 8 hours/day), relubricate every 3–6 months. Mark it on the maintenance schedule. Don’t wait for noise — noise means the guide is already dry.
Step 3: Automatic Lubrication
For machines that run continuously (24/7) or are hard to reach, use an automatic lubricator.
Single-Point Oiler (Spring or Battery)
A small reservoir (100–500 ml) mounted near the guide. A spring (or battery-powered pump) dispenses oil or grease over weeks or months. The guide gets continuous lubrication. No manual greasing.
Best for: Single guides, inaccessible locations, continuous duty.
Central Lubrication System (Multi-Point)
A central pump (electric or pneumatic) distributes oil to multiple guides (and ball screws) through a tubing network. The pump runs on a timer (e.g., 10 seconds every 8 hours). Each lube point gets a measured amount.
Best for: Machines with multiple axes (several guides and screws). Standard for CNC machines and gantries.
The lubrication rule: Grease the guide at installation. Set a relubrication interval (3–6 months for general duty). Lubricant Type: Match the Manufacturer

Lubrication Fittings and Lines
Each carriage has a grease fitting (zerk). For multiple carriages, run lube lines from a central point.
- Single fitting (manual): A zerk on each carriage. The operator greases each one.
- Group lube block: A manifold with lines to each carriage. One grease point feeds all carriages.
- Central pump: An automatic pump connected to the group block. Dispenses on schedule.
Signs of Dry Lubrication
The guide tells you when it’s dry:
- Noise: A grinding or rattling sound (the balls are running dry).
- Rough motion: The carriage doesn’t slide smoothly (stiction).
- Discoloration: The rail or carriage is discolored (heat from friction).
- Increased friction: The motor draws more current (the drive notices).
If you hear noise, stop the machine and relubricate. Running a dry guide destroys it in days.
Wipers and Seals
Linear guide carriages have wipers (end seals) that wipe dirt off the rail as the carriage moves. Keep the wipers intact (replace if torn). A damaged wiper lets dirt into the carriage, which wears the balls and raceways.
For dirty environments (machining chips, dust), add a cover (bellows or steel band) over the rail. The wipers alone aren’t enough in a dirty shop.
